A Small Sugar Coma
Something that my brother and my cousin and I like to do is to try out new doughnut places.
In Austin, Texas, a new doughnut shoppe called Voodoo Doughnuts opened and so we decided to try it out.
According to dictionary.com Voodoo is defined as a "polytheistic religion practicing chiefly by West Indians, deriving principally from African cult worship, and contain gin elements borrowed from the catholic religion.
Voodoo Doughnuts is originally based out of Portland, Oregon and is open 24 hours, which is great if you have the late night munchies.
When you first walk into the shoppe it has a very punk feeling, where most of the decorations describe either music, skeletons, or well... doughnuts. Interestingly enough, the store had a huge emphasis on the color pink.
The line that you have to stand in to get the doughnuts seems very long, but there are menus that you can read to pass the time. The place is filled with interesting types of doughnuts including cereal doughnuts. However, we did not choose to try any cereal doughnuts.
Instead we chose to try the Pot Hole Doughnut, the Chuckles Doughnut, the Raspberry Romeo's Doughnut, and finally the Voodoo Doll Doughnut.
Pot Hole Doughnut was a long cream filled chocolate doughnut that was covered with Oreos and had frosting that symbolized the lines on the road.
Chuckles Doughnut was a regular doughnut that was frosted with chocolate, dipped in mocha powder, and then topped with more chocolate, nuts and Carmel.
Raspberry Romeo's Doughnut was a normal doughnut that was filled with raspberry filling.
Voodoo Doll Doughnut was a regular doughnut that had raspberry filling and frosting that was designed like a Voodoo Doll... complete with a pretzel stake.
We were very confident that we would be able to finish our doughnuts, however we were wrong. As we ate, we realized that there was so much sugar. None of us were able to finish any of the doughnuts. After we left the doughnut shoppe, we all realized that we were feeling quite sick, but it was worth it.
Our verdict: The doughnuts were really good, however they were so so sweet, to the point where you feel like you are in a sugar coma. Would I go back? Of course, the different flavors of the doughnuts were so enticing that I would want to try more flavors.
Here are some photos of us enjoying the doughnuts.
